Watch This, Read That — Selma/March, Book 1

The 2014 movie Selma (DVD DRAMA SEL) follows the story of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. and others in the period leading up to, and culminating in, the voting rights marches from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965. This film was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama, and also nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

In the March series of Graphic Novels (GN LEW), Congressman John Lewis gives his firsthand account of the civil rights movement in America. Book 1 begins with his youth in rural Alabama and goes through his participation in the lunch counter protests in Nashville in 1960. Throughout his involvement, Lewis was undeterred in his commitment to nonviolence in combating discrimination against African Americans in the “Jim Crow” South.
