Watch This, Read That — Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist / Eleanor & Park

Today we visit the Young Adult realm where we witness the convergence of young love and music. First up is Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist (DVD COMEDY NIC). Nick is reeling from a breakup with his girlfriend when he sees her at a club with a new guy. That same night he meets Norah, a friend of his ex. Nick and Norah have similar musical tastes and spend the evening riding through Manhattan looking for one of Norah’s friends, and also looking for their favorite band’s super-secret after-hours show. Will a wild night in New York City bring them together?

For the accompanying book, I chose Eleanor & Park (HS ROWELL, R), written by Rainbow Rowell. New student Eleanor meets Park when she sits with him on the school bus, the first day of school in 1986 Omaha. Their dislike for each other is immediate, but over the days and weeks she begins reading his comic books over his shoulder and he eventually lends them to her. Gradually they begin bonding over comics and music (he makes her mixtapes), and a connection grows between them. Will it last?

These two choices are good if you’re looking for something that’s romantic (and sometimes painful), as new love can be.
