Watch This, Read That: Vampires!

As we get close to Halloween, here are a couple of classics to scare and entertain you. For the movie we go to the 1931 Tod Browning film Dracula (DVD HORROR DRA), starring Bela Lugosi in the titular role. Count Dracula travels from Transylvania to London with a man named Renfield, who has been put under Dracula’s spell. Upon reaching London, Count Dracula meets Dr. Seward and his daughter Mina. He is taken with Mina and the story follows the Count’s attempts to make her his vampire wife. To this day, no other actor personifies the role of Dracula as does Bela Lugosi.

For a different take on the vampire legend we have Stephen King’s second published novel, Salem’s Lot (F KING, S). This 1975 work takes place in Jerusalem’s Lot, a small town in Maine where two strange newcomers appear, and soon the town is overrun with vampires. Ben Mears, who lived in the town as a child, has returned to write a book but gets caught up working with others in town to stem the growing population of vampires. Will they succeed?

Happy Halloween!
