Watch This, Read That

Have you ever watched a movie and wondered, “Is there a book that is similar in subject matter that I can read to get more out of the experience?” Wonder no longer! In the coming weeks we’ll post a TV show or movie you may have seen, paired with a related book owned by the Library.

First up is The Man in the High Castle, a TV series from Amazon Studios, based on the 1962 novel by Philip K. Dick. The show takes place in an alternate 1962, where the Axis powers have won World War II and the Nazis and Japan control different parts of the United States. (This series is available on Amazon Prime, and is not yet released on DVD.)

As a companion book I suggest The Plot Against America, by Philip Roth (F ROTH, P.). Published in 2004, this is another “alternate history” story, wherein the conservative aviator Charles Lindbergh defeats Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1940 presidential election. The story follows a Jewish-American family, the Roths, in the aftermath of the election, when antisemitism becomes more widely accepted in America, and Jewish Americans are harassed by their fellow citizens.

Each of these items gives the viewer/reader a “what if” scenario to ponder, and a glimpse at “what might have been” if history had turned out differently.

Enjoy! See you next time!
